Summer Reading Information

WHY IS SUMMER READING IMPORTANT?
Research shows that the number of books read during the summer is consistently related to academic gains and that children in every income group who read over the summer gained more in reading achievement than children who did not. (Barbara Hayns, 1978; Krashen, 1993; Johnson, 2000)

One of the standards that students in Woonsocket are expected to meet is that each student should read 25 books or book equivalents in a year. In order to help our students meet the standard, we require students to read at least 3 books over the summer.

Students are encouraged to read more! Reading opens doors to new experiences and information…and reading is FUN!
